The Tailored Perspective: Michelle Kennedy
Michelle Kennedy, Founder of Peanut
Tell us about your work.
“In February 2017, I created Peanut – a social networking app that connected mothers and helped them create a conversation and community. One of the first among my group of friends to become a mother (Finlay is age 5), I realized what an isolating experience having a child can be, so I wanted to create a platform for like-minded women to connect.”
What inspires you?
“My son Finlay, every day. I love the way he thinks about the world – the innocence and sheer determination he applies to solve any problem, and his laugh!”
How does what you’re wearing affect your work day?
“I think it reflects my state of mind. If I am going in to pitch or do a presentation, then I want to feel strong and confident. Something tailored and structured helps me to feel that way. If I am in an introspective zone, I want to be almost invisible, so something comfortable and low-key is important.”
Describe your ideal working environment.
“Probably what we have – somewhere collaborative and relaxed. We listen to music and have lots of free discussion in the office. I am very much of the mindset that if the work gets done, I don’t mind when you’re doing it. We’re in this together after all.”
Describe your ideal wear-to-work outfit.
“I really love whites and creams. They’re such a refresher from the dark tones I think we’re expected wear a lot, so even if it’s an accent, you’ll see me in lighter warm tones. Nothing can ever look bad with a sharp blazer either. Something well-cut and elegant will carry any outfit, and make you look ‘done’ with little effort.”
What makes you feel empowered?
“Women doing amazing things, whether that’s a Peanut user using the platform to meet a business partner or find a job, or whether that’s another female founder raising money. That gives me the motivation to keep going, because attitudes are changing, society is changing and we’re part of that!”
What is your approach to dressing for work?
“I always want to feel like the best version of me, so something that makes me feel good, strong and confident. Whether that’s because the cut is great or the color, I want to feel like I can take on the day and that starts with how I feel when I get ready in the morning.”
