The Tailored Perspective: Kat Collings

Kat Collings, Editor in Chief of Who What Wear

Tell us about your work.
I'm the editor in chief of Who What Wear, which means I manage our team of editors and work on content strategy. I make sure what we're putting out on the site daily is always moving the brand forward, while simultaneously hitting all our goals.

What inspires you?

So many things! A few (in no particular order) are: meeting new people in the industry, hearing our readers' points of view and traveling.

Describe your ideal working environment.

Collaborative, supportive and creative. A culture where it's okay to be vulnerable is also important because that allows for the most honest and productive conversation and innovative thinking.

How does what you’re wearing affect your work day?

My outfit affects my mood quite a bit. If I'm wearing something I feel good in, it directly translates to my confidence. All the more reason to invest in pieces that make you feel your best.

What is your approach to dressing for work?
Since I work in fashion, it's equal parts professionalism and showing my personal style. Balancing the two is what I think about every day when I'm staring down my closet trying to come up with that day's look.

Describe your ideal wear-to-work outfit.

It will usually involve a blazer, since that’s the easiest way to make the outfit office-appropriate. Even if I'm wearing the latest chunky sandal trend, there's still a bit of polish to my look. I usually gravitate toward tailored pieces, so trousers with interesting details are on heavy rotation too.

What makes you feel empowered?

Whenever I need to feel more empowered or get a confidence boost, I try and picture how 20-year-old me would look at current me. She would be impressed!  Taking a moment to gain perspective on how far you've actually come makes whatever future mountains you're looking to scale look more achievable. I've risen before, and I will rise again.
