12 Hours in La Vie: Paula Goldstein

Paula Goldstein

Director of Born Free Film and directing Non-Profit The Mother Lovers

My style in three words…

Spontaneous, colorful, relaxed.

My neighborhood is…

Pasadena, AKA America’s most suburban suburb. At first glance, it’s just kind of historic and pretty- friends from West Hollywood visit like it’s a vacation.

So many all-American movies have been shot here that it had already given me a white picket fence idea of what the US was before I even left the UK. (I promise I have broadened my horizons to the realities of the land of the free since my days watching Beethoven the dog movies). But still, it’s so family friendly that it’s almost like the place has pockets of Stars Hollow mixed into its leafy streets.

But scratch below the surface and you’ll find some of the US’s most interesting minds in the local coffee shop, due to the proximity of NASA, including a bus to take you to the “jet prop lab”, and Cal-Tech. Huntington Library has scrolls of texts from everyone from Susan B Anthony to Shakespeare. There’s the Rose Parade and Wisteria festival, plus they are proudly part of Tree City USA. It’s not hip at all, but I increasingly think it’s very cool.

My go-to hangout is…

Amara Coffee and Chocolate… because Churros and Dulce De Leche coffee, obviously.

My ideal outfit…

Has changed so much since moving to LA. I’ve mostly lived in wide leg pants and soft blouses or summer dresses and sneakers. It’s weird that the change in seasons is just pulling on a wool sweater over said dress.

My style icon…

Take the 1970’s style of Gloria Steinem and Jane Fonda, and mix it with Zoe Kravitz, and I think you’re there.
